Some MPC reports include links that open a patient's record directly in Dentally. This article explains how these links work and what to check if a link doesn't show the patient you expect.
How do patient links work?
Each patient in Dentally has an ID number. The link in your MPC report uses that ID to open the patient's record in Dentally in a new browser tab.
An important detail: a patient ID is only unique within a single Dentally site. The same ID (for example, 1234) in two different Dentally sites refers to two completely different patients. The link itself does not contain any information about which Dentally site the patient belongs to.
Do I need to be logged into Dentally?
Yes. If you are not logged in, the new tab will show the Dentally login page instead of the patient record. Log in and click the link again.
I clicked a link and it showed a different patient. Why?
This happens when your browser is logged into a different Dentally site than the one the report data came from. Because the link only contains the patient ID – not the Dentally site – Dentally opens whichever patient has that ID in the site you are currently logged into.
To fix this: log out of Dentally, log into the correct Dentally site for the practice shown in the report, then click the link again.
Who is affected by this?
If your group uses a single Dentally site (the most common setup), you will always be logged into the right place and this will not be an issue.
If you have access to more than one Dentally site – for example, your reports combine data from several sites – your browser can only be logged into one Dentally site at a time. Before clicking a patient link, make sure you are logged into the Dentally site that the patient belongs to.
Quick checklist
Be logged into Dentally before clicking a patient link.
If you have access to multiple Dentally sites, confirm you are logged into the correct one for that patient.
If the wrong patient appears, switch to the correct Dentally site and click the link again.
