Understanding Treatment Classifications

How MPC Explorer Automatically Categorises Treatments

Why Treatment Classification Matters

One of the biggest challenges in dental reporting is inconsistent service codes.

The same treatment can often be recorded using different codes or descriptions across practices or providers. For example, an implant consultation might appear as:

  • Implant Consult

  • Implant Assessment

  • Implant Exam

  • Consultation – Implant

Over time, practices may also create multiple codes for the same treatment, making it difficult to analyse performance accurately.

Without normalisation, this can make reporting unreliable when trying to answer questions like:

  • How much revenue are we generating from crowns?

  • Which practice performs the most implants?

  • What is our hygiene treatment volume?

To solve this, MPC Explorer automatically classifies treatment codes into standardised treatment categories using a customised classification algorithm designed specifically for dental treatment data.

Automatic Treatment Categorisation

MPC Explorer scans the service codes used in your reporting period and automatically assigns them to a treatment category using our classification engine.

This allows Explorer to group different codes under meaningful clinical categories such as:

  • Crowns

  • Implants

  • Implant Consultations

  • Hygiene

  • Orthodontics

  • Dentures

  • Facial Aesthetics

  • Routine Restorative

By doing this automatically, Explorer ensures that reports reflect the true treatment activity across your practices, regardless of how individual service codes are named.

This makes it possible to confidently analyse:

  • Treatment revenue

  • Treatment volumes

  • Average revenue per treatment

  • Provider performance by treatment type

Reviewing Treatment Classifications

If you want to review how service codes have been categorised, click Review Classifications within the Treatments section.

This opens the Treatment Category Classifications window.

Here you can see:

  • Each service code detected in your data

  • The MPC category it has been assigned to

  • A confidence score indicating how certain the system is about the classification

This provides transparency into how treatments are being grouped within your reports. You can also easily search, filter and download all the data shown here.

Overriding a Classification

In some cases, you may want to adjust how a specific code is categorised.

For example, if a custom service code has been assigned incorrectly or your practice uses a code differently.

To change a classification:

  1. Click Override next to the service code

  2. Select the correct treatment category

  3. Save the change

Your override will take precedence over the automatic classification.

Why This Is Powerful

By intelligently grouping treatment codes into consistent categories, MPC Explorer removes one of the biggest barriers to accurate reporting.

This allows practices and groups to:

  • Understand true treatment performance

  • Compare activity across providers and practices

  • Identify high-value treatment opportunities

  • Analyse revenue by treatment type with confidence

All without needing to manually clean or standardise service codes.
